Abstract

Objective: In this paper, a case is presented of a female
adult patient with generalized hypercementosis (GHC)
which could only be attributed to two rarely reported
predisposing factors. It also seeks to critically review the
literature concerning the possible role of two identified
predisposing factors.

Case Description: A case of a 50-year-old female trader
with generalized hypercementosis discovered as an
accidental radiographic finding in the process of
assessing her periodontal status. She presented with
complaint of gradually increasing mobility leading to
loss of some anterior teeth in the upper left quadrant
resulting in poor facial aesthetics and the desire to have
the lost teeth replaced. Examination revealed a case of
oral neglect and generalized periodontitis. Patient’s
facial features revealed disfigurement and increased
facial height due to generalized excessive eruption. The
patient was systemically healthy except for bilateral
knee osteoarthritis.

Conclusion: Periodontitis and osteoarthritis can be
associated with the development of hypercementosis.
The dental surgeon should, therefore consider these as
possible risk factors in patients presenting with
hypercementosis.
