Effect of Non- Surgical Periodontal Therapy on Salivary Albumin Concentration in Patients with Stage II Localized Periodontitis

Objective: To evaluate the effect of non-surgical
periodontal therapy on salivary albumin concentration
in patients with stage II localized periodontitis.
Methods: Saliva samples and periodontal indices were
collected from 40 individuals: 20 with stage II localized
periodontitis and 20 healthy control subjects at
baseline; then at 1- and 3-months following non-
surgical periodontal therapy of those with stage II
localized periodontitis. The saliva specimens were
analyzed for albumin using the bromocresol green
method. All data were analyzed using the statistical
package for social sciences, version 23.0(SPSS 23.0).
Independent t- test, Pearson’s correlation test, and
Repeated Measures of ANOVA were used for statistical
analysis at a significance level of 0.05 (5 %).
Results: From baseline, through 1- to 3-months post
therapy, the mean (SD) salivary albumin concentration
of the test subjects reduced from 0.70 (0.13) g/dl to 0.58
(0.14) g/dl and 0.35 (0.09) g/dl respectively, while that of
control subjects remained relatively stable: 0.27 (0.03)
g/dl, 0.25 (0.04) g/dl and 0.24 (0.04) g/dl respectively.
There was a statistically significant difference in the
mean concentration of salivary albumin between the
test and control groups at baseline, 1- and 3-months
post therapy (p<0.001). Also, the reduction in mean
salivary albumin concentration occurred alongside
improving periodontal parameters.
Conclusion: This study showed that there was a
reduction in salivary albumin concentration following
non-surgical periodontal therapy among patients with
stage II localized periodontitis.
